Gipton: what to know before moving day
The estate was the project of Charles Jenkinson, vicar of Holbeck, and building began in April 1934. The plan gave it two very wide main roads, of 150 and 125 feet, with tram tracks down the middle and grass verges, a shopping centre of 40 shops, and sites set aside for churches, schools and playing fields. Many of the street names use Coldcotes, after an Anglo-Saxon settlement of that name. With wide roads and verges, the thing to check is where the van can pull in close to the path, so send a photo of the front of the house.
In the 2000s some houses were demolished and replaced with a mix of private and council homes, around Amberton Road, Amberton Terrace and Amberton Close in the north and Brander Road and Greenview Mount in the south. The Church of the Epiphany, Grade I listed and built in 1936 to 1938, stands where Amberton Road meets Beech Lane, and the Old Fire Station on Gipton Approach, opened in 1937, is now a community centre.
How the van gets to Gipton
Easterly Road, the A58 dual carriageway built in the 1930s, passes Gipton on the north side, and York Road, the A64, on the south. From Bradford, the A647 brings the van into Leeds and the Inner Ring Road links it to either; Coldcotes Avenue, Amberton Road and Beech Lane are the through roads inside the estate.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
