Oakwood: what to know before moving day
The Oakwood Clock is the landmark everyone gives directions from. It was built in 1904 for Kirkgate Market, then put up here instead, and Oakwood Library sits diagonally opposite it. Oakwood Parade, the terrace of shops along Roundhay Road, was started in 1894 and finished in the 1920s; the Fish Bar on it has been frying since 1934 and is Grade II listed. On the third Saturday of each month the farmers' market sets up around the clock, so for a Saturday move near the parade another weekend may be easier.
The houses came after 1891, when land around Oakwood House was sold as the Oakwood Building Estate. Oakwood Grange, where Louis Le Prince filmed the Roundhay Garden Scene in 1888, was pulled down in 1972 for the Oakwood Grange estate. South of the clock, Gipton Wood is an ancient wood of about 20 acres bounded by Oakwood Boundary Road, Roundhay Road and Copgrove Road, with more housing below it. Streets such as Oakwood Lane, Oakwood Grove, Montagu Drive and Springwood Road make up the residential side.
How the van gets to Oakwood
From Bradford, one way round is the Leeds Outer Ring Road (A6120), which passes along the north edge of Roundhay Park, before dropping south through Roundhay to Oakwood. The other is through the city and out on Roundhay Road, which runs past the parade. The A58 Easterly Road, a dual carriageway, marks the usual line between Oakwood and Gipton. Not quite. It carries the name but sits in Gipton, south of Easterly Road. The LS8 postcode covers Oakwood, Fearnville, Gipton and Harehills, so give us the street as well as the postcode.
Some Oakwood shops say Roundhay. Which is right?
Both are used. Oakwood has no official boundary and sits in the Roundhay ward, so places such as the Post Office and Tesco describe themselves as Roundhay. It does not change anything for the move.
