Gledhow: what to know before moving day
The valley shapes everything here. Gledhow Valley Road, built in 1926, runs along the bottom beside the woods, and Gledhow Lane crosses it and climbs steeply up the eastern side. The residential area near the top was once nicknamed Little Switzerland. On a steep street, the van parks where it is level and safe, so tell us if your drive or the road outside slopes hard.
A small green space called The Green sits where Gledhow Lane, Lidgett Lane and Gledhow Wood Road meet, and is a clear landmark for directions. Streets off it include Lidgett Hill, Lidgett Grove, Gledhow Wood Close and Thorn Lane. Gipton Spa, a bathhouse from 1671, stands in the woods. Gledhow Hall, remodelled by the architect John Carr in the 1760s and later home of the Kitson family, is Grade II* listed. The valley and its surroundings are covered by the Gledhow Valley Conservation Area.
How the van gets to Gledhow
From Bradford, the Leeds Outer Ring Road (A6120) crosses the north of the city; the van can leave it at Moortown and come south on Harrogate Road, then east along Gledhow Valley Road or Gledhow Lane. Coming the other way, Roundhay Road and Lidgett Lane lead up from the Roundhay side. On our estimate Gledhow Lane is roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Bradford.
