Holbeck: what to know before moving day
Holbeck is unusual in Leeds because so many early and mid 19th-century industrial buildings survive in their original street pattern. It has 33 listed buildings, among them Marshall's Mill, Temple Works, Tower Works, with its two Italianate towers, and the Round Foundry on Water Lane. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through, and the 1877 Holbeck Working Men's Club is the oldest surviving club of its kind in the UK.
The housing has changed a great deal. From 2007 the council emptied back-to-back houses, and demolition began in 2010. On the Jenkinson Estate, low-rise blocks of flats came down and new social housing, from two-bedroom flats to four-bedroom houses, went up in their place, and back-to-back rows on Brown Lane West and Top Moor Side were replaced too. Around the research point, OpenStreetMap shows Holbeck Moor Road, the Shafton streets, Ingram Road and Holbeck Moor Park, with St Matthew's Community Centre in the former church.
How the van gets to Holbeck
The A643, the Ingram Distributor, is Holbeck's western edge: a dual carriageway linking the Armley Gyratory with junction 2 of the M621. From Bradford, the A647 runs to the Armley Gyratory, or the M606 and M62 lead to the M621. Nineveh Road, Holbeck Moor Road, Top Moor Side and St Matthew's Street are the local roads.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 35 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
