Beeston: what to know before moving day

Beeston Hill, on the slope facing the city, is mostly older Victorian terraces with newer social housing, and by 1900 much of Beeston lived in back-to-backs. Cross Flatts Park separates it from the Parkside and Cross Flatts side, sometimes called Beeston Village, where late Victorian and early 20th-century terraces east of Old Lane give way to semis and housing association homes to the west. On a back-to-back there is only one door, so everything leaves by the front.

The west, around Elland Road and Millshaw, is mostly industrial estates, with semis and terraces along Town Street, the old village road. Beeston Library, St Anthony's Catholic Primary School and The Old White Hart are on or near Town Street. Cad Beeston manor house, dated to about 1420, is a Grade II* listed private home, and parts of Stank Hall Barn date from between 1448 and 1490.

How the van gets to Beeston

The M621 runs along the north side, and the old turnpikes survive as Elland Road (A643) and Dewsbury Road. Town Street joins Old Lane, Wesley Street and Beeston Road, and at its west end becomes Millshaw, which meets Ring Road Beeston (A6110). From Bradford the M62 and the M621 are the quickest line in.

Why is there no station in Beeston any more?

It closed to passengers in 1953. The nearest is Cottingley, on the Huddersfield Line, just under a mile from the Town Street end.
