Middleton (Leeds): what to know before moving day
The old village runs along Town Street, a 30 mph road with St Mary's Church, designed by R. D. Chantrell in 1845 to 1846 and Grade II listed along with its lych gate. The gate-house of the lost Middleton Hall still stands beside it. Street names such as Newhall Road, Newhall Crescent and Newhall Chase recall New Hall, once home of the Leigh family.
After Leeds took over in 1920, the council built a large low-density cottage estate laid out with circuses and avenues, and by 1934 there were 2,377 council houses, many of them in brick from the Broom Pit works. That is why so many addresses are on Middleton Park Avenue, Middleton Park Circus, Middleton Park Grove and their neighbours. The Westwoods and Manor Farm estates followed in the 1960s, private housing at Sharp Lane after 1972, and about 1,300 houses at Leeds New Forest Village after 2005.
Middleton Park fills the north side: 630 acres, 200 of them ancient woodland, with a lake and the Leeds Urban Bike Park, known locally as Miggy Park. The Middleton Railway, founded in 1758, still runs at weekends from Moor Road in Hunslet to Park Halt.
How the van gets to Middleton (Leeds)
The Leeds Outer Ring Road starts in Belle Isle and runs through Middleton as an un-numbered road, mapped here as Ring Road Middleton, before becoming the A6110 at Beeston. Middleton Park Road meets it and is one-way in places. From Bradford the van can take the Stanningley bypass (A647) onto the ring road and follow it south through Farnley and Beeston.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
