Mabgate: what to know before moving day
Woollen mills went up along the Lady Beck, also called Mabgate Beck, at the end of the 18th century, and by 1850 the area was packed with works and workers' houses. Four buildings are now listed: the Hope Foundry and its offices, Hope House, on Mabgate itself, the Smithfield Hotel on North Street and Crispin House on New York Road. The foundry made lamps, bollards, benches and mileposts, and many are still in the streets. The City of Mabgate Inn of 1857 became flats in 2006.
Across the beck is the street called Mabgate Green, and west of it was the old Leylands district. Leeds City College bought land on the east side of Mabgate in 2020 and has been building a campus there. For a flat in a converted building or a unit in a yard, give the entrance and say whether the van can get into the yard; part of Mabgate is mapped as a living street.
How the van gets to Mabgate
The A64(M) section of the Inner Ring Road runs along the southern edge as New York Road. From Bradford, the A647 ends at the Armley Gyratory on the west side of Leeds, and the ring road carries the van across the north of the centre to this corner. North Street on the west and Regent Street through the middle are the main roads in.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
