Steander: what to know before moving day
The biggest block is The Gateway, built from 2006 on a traffic island between Crown Point Road, East Street and Marsh Lane, over the site of an old sawmill and the lost Steander Lane, Steander Row and Steander Bow. What is left of the street called Steander is now the car entrance to The Gateway's ground level and its underground parking. Ask the building whether that car park has a height barrier; if it does, plan for the van to stop at street level and send the block and floor with your photos.
Between East Street and the river, Fearn's Island was dye works and timber wharves. Many of the mill buildings are listed and have been turned into flats and offices, around Fearn's Wharf, Merchant's Quay and Rose Wharf, and the Knight's Way footbridge crosses to Leeds Dock and the Royal Armouries. To the north, the 1950s Saxton Gardens estate east of Quarry Hill was redeveloped by Urban Splash as Saxton, and the Phoenix and Altitude towers went up in 2024 beside the old Marsh Lane station. Leeds Bus Station is about 300 metres away, and Leeds Central Ambulance Station sits next to Saxton.
How the van gets to Steander
From Bradford the A647 comes in through Stanningley and Armley to the Armley Gyratory, and the Inner Ring Road then carries traffic round the north of the centre on the A58(M) and A64(M). Leaving it for York Road puts you on Steander's northern edge. The motorway alternative is the M62 and M621, then the A61, which runs along East Street and Marsh Lane past The Gateway.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Steander: questions before you book
Is Steander still on the map as an address?
Only just. Leeds City Council's street register still lists Steander, much shortened, and it now works as The Gateway's vehicle entrance. The council counts the old area as part of Hunslet, so give the building name and East Street, Marsh Lane or the wharf when you book.
Where exactly is Fearns Island?
Two places share the name. Historically it meant the wharves between East Street and the river, where most of the converted flats are. Today it often means the small island at Leeds Locks, between the Steander bank and Leeds Dock. Give the street and building, not just the island.
