Moving in Knowsthorpe: what to know first
The homes near Knowsthorpe are on its northern edge, where it meets Cross Green: houses and a few flats on Cross Green Lane, Back Cross Green Lane, Cross Green Crescent and St Hilda's Road, all in a 20 mph area with speed tables and cushions. Knowsthorpe Crescent is closed to motor traffic part of the way along, so the van cannot drive straight through; say which end your door is nearer, and the driver will come in from that side.
South of the houses it is industrial estate, and Knowsthorpe Lane is partly one-way between the units. The A63, signed as Aire Valley Way, Long Causeway and Pontefract Lane, is a 40 mph dual carriageway, so the van has to be in the right lane for the turn and cannot stop on it. For a business unit, send the company name and which gate to use, as many yards here are private.
Knowsthorpe: the local picture
At the time of Domesday this was open fields and the lord of the manor's rabbit warren, and in 1341 about 30 tenants farmed it. Knostrop Hall, built in the 17th century by Adam Baynes, MP for Leeds under the Commonwealth, was home to the painter Atkinson Grimshaw in the 1870s and was pulled down in 1960; industrial estates cover the ground now, and the Knostrop spelling survives in the name of the big water treatment works.
The river has been reshaped for flood defence. In October 2017 a movable weir, one of the first two of its kind in the UK, went in at Knostrop, and a 600-metre strip called Knostrop Cut Island was removed so that river and canal could merge. Knowsthorpe Crescent, off Cross Green Lane, is the nearest housing, while Knowsthorpe Lane runs south-east from the Long Causeway and Aire Valley Way junctions past industrial units. For a unit, send the business name and which gate to use.
How the van gets to Knowsthorpe
From Bradford the usual route goes along the A647 and A6110 to the M621, then takes the A61 and the A63 east before turning into Knowsthorpe Lane, roughly 25 to 40 minutes. The A63 here is a dual carriageway named Aire Valley Way and Long Causeway, so the turning needs to be planned in advance; Cross Green Lane is the way in to the houses.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Knowsthorpe
Wikipedia and the postcode lookup give different wards for Knowsthorpe. Which is right?
Both describe part of it. Wikipedia places Knowsthorpe in the Temple Newsam ward, while postcodes.io puts LS9 0PF, by Knowsthorpe Lane, in Burmantofts & Richmond Hill. The ward lines cross the industrial land here, and either way the council is Leeds City Council, so the full postcode is what matters.
Is Knowsthorpe the same as Knostrop?
Yes, they are two spellings of one place, and Knostropp turns up too. Knostrop is mostly used for the large water treatment works and the weir on the River Aire; street signs and addresses use Knowsthorpe, as in Knowsthorpe Lane and Knowsthorpe Crescent.
Can you move a small business out of a unit on Knowsthorpe Lane?
Yes, if it fits the van's 3.4m x 1.3m x 1.7m load space. Tell us the company name, which gate the van should use and whether there is a loading door, and the price is agreed before the van sets off.
