Moor Allerton: what to know before moving day
King Lane splits Moor Allerton in two. To the west is the Black Moor estate, which includes Cranmer Bank and streets such as Tynwald Drive and Saxon Mount, with housing from the 1950s up to recent years along Black Moor Road. It has its own parade of shops with a post office, and Moortown Social Club is on Cranmer Gardens. To the east is the Lingfield estate, mainly semi-detached rented homes and council flats; the signs there read Lingfields and Fir Trees. Lingfield Towers stands just inside the Ring Road.
The Moor Allerton District Centre, west of the King Lane junction, was first opened in 1982 and largely rebuilt in the 1990s. It has a large Sainsbury's, a Homebase and a library, and it is an obvious landmark for directions. Small woods sit among the houses: Tynwald Woods and Cranmer Bank Wood, both looked after by the city council. Why does my Moor Allerton address say Moortown?
The two names overlap and many institutions use both. Most of Moor Allerton is in Alwoodley ward, and the part south of the Ring Road is in Moortown ward. The LS17 postcode is what the van works from.
Is Moor Allerton Golf Club still in Moor Allerton?
No. The club opened off Nursery Lane in 1923 but moved to Coal Road, Wike, in 1971, and its old Nursery Lane site was sold for housing.
