Meanwood: what to know before moving day
A lot of Meanwood's housing is a conversion of something else, which affects access. Sugarwell Court on Meanwood Road was the Cliff Tannery of 1866 and is now a university hall of residence. Meanwood Hall became the centre of Meanwood Park Hospital, and since the hospital closed in 1997 the hall and its grounds have been turned into housing. Meanwood Towers, an 1860s Gothic house by E. W. Pugin behind Stonegate Road, is now flats. Carr Manor, once the judges' lodgings, is private homes and gave its name to a 1950s estate. In a converted building, check the lift, the stairs and where the van may stop before moving day.
Older Meanwood survives in small pieces: Hustler's Row, a group of 1850 stone cottages named after a quarry owner, and a few houses on Monkbridge Road. Across the valley are 20th century council homes leading up to Scott Hall, and newer private estates known as the Woodleas, the Stonegates and the Bowoods. The Farm Hill estate was rebuilt in 1990 as semi-detached houses and bungalows.
The postcode follows Meanwood Road: Farm Hill is LS7, and the Boothroyd Drive estate on the south side is LS6. The shops by the Waitrose on Green Road, Holy Trinity Church and Meanwood Park are the easiest places to point the van to.
How the van gets to Meanwood
Meanwood Road runs up the valley from the city centre, and Stonegate Road climbs north past Tunnel How Hill towards the Leeds Outer Ring Road (A6120). From Bradford, the Ring Road is the usual way across the north of Leeds, turning south into Meanwood; Stainbeck Lane links it east to Chapel Allerton. Estimated time from Bradford to Stonegate Road: roughly 25 to 40 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
