West Park (Leeds): what to know before moving day
The suburb splits into two quite different halves. Between Otley Road and Spen Lane are early 20th century detached and semi-detached houses on tree-lined streets with wide pavements, most of them inside a conservation area, plus some older Victorian houses near Otley Road that are now flats. West of Spen Lane is Moor Grange, a council estate built in the 1950s on farmland called Old Farm, which is why you find Old Farm Drive and Oldfarm Parade there. The smaller Spen Estate lies south of Butcher Hill.
The day-to-day centre on the estate side is around Spen Lane and Butcher Hill: Abbey Grange Church of England High School, St Chad's primary school, St Andrew's church, a Co-op and a pub called The Dalesman. On Otley Road there is a parade of shops with Dutch-style fronts. Lawnswood School sits between West Park and Lawnswood. Any of these makes a good meeting point if the van is coming to you for the first time.
How the van gets to West Park (Leeds)
From Bradford the A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road runs from Farsley across the north of West Park, and the A660 Otley Road forms its eastern edge. Spen Lane is the main road through the middle, reaching down to Queenswood Drive at the southern end. Why is the corner of West Park near Spen Lane in Kirkstall ward?
The ward line follows Spen Lane and the Ring Road. Most of West Park is in Weetwood ward, but the south-west corner, west of Spen Lane and south of the Ring Road, is in Kirkstall ward, which is where the LS16 5BD postcode falls. Both are Leeds City Council, so bins and council tax work the same either way.
