Shadwell: what to know before moving day
Shadwell kept its village shape. In the early 1800s it had fewer than 200 people and 11 farms, and from the middle of that century wealthier families from Leeds built houses here in stone from the local quarries. Several buildings are listed: St Paul's Church of 1842, the former Methodist chapel of 1814, which now houses the independent village library, and even the fish and chip shop, in a building dating from 1637. The Holywell Triangle is a conservation area, named after a holy well near Spencer House on Holywell Lane.
Main Street is the spine of the village, with the shops, the Red Lion pub, the Village Hall and the 1892 Methodist Chapel. Colliers Lane, Gateland Drive and Ash Hill Drive are among the streets close by, and the medieval chapel of ease stood on Gateland Lane. If you live in one of the older stone houses, measure the doorways and stairs before booking a large sofa and send the figures with a photo.
How the van gets to Shadwell
From Bradford the van crosses north Leeds on the A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road to Moortown, then heads east along Shadwell Lane to Slaid Hill; the village is about half a mile further east, past open fields and the Shadwell name sign.
