Wike: what to know before moving day
Golf takes up much of the map around Wike. The Leeds Golf Centre, with the 18-hole Wike Ridge course, is on Forge Lane, and Moor Allerton Golf Club and The Village Golf Course are also on the map, along with a Scout and Guide campsite. The houses are scattered along a handful of lanes: Wike Lane, School Lane, Wike Ridge Lane, Fortshot Lane and Backstone Gill Lane.
Some homes are old. The Old Schoolhouse on School Lane dates from 1726 and was paid for by Lady Elizabeth Hastings; it served as a school on weekdays and a church on Sundays and is now a large detached house. Wike Manor, from the mid-18th century, is Grade II listed. Wike is one of the few villages in Leeds with no public bus service, the last one having been rerouted in 2003, so plan how you will get there yourself on moving day. If your house has a name, send it with the lane.
How the van gets to Wike
From Bradford the van crosses north Leeds towards Shadwell and comes up to Wike on the local lanes. Wike Ridge Lane and Backstone Gill Lane are the two through roads, with Backstone Gill Lane running east towards Bardsey.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Why is Wike sometimes spelled Wyke?
Because that was the spelling of its civil parish, which existed from 1866 until 1 April 1937, when it was merged with Harewood. Before that Wike was a township in Harewood and Bardsey parishes. Today the hamlet is spelled Wike and sits in Harewood parish, LS17.
