Harewood: what to know before moving day
The village was moved in the late 18th century, when the Lascelles family built Harewood House (1759 to 1771, by John Carr and Robert Adam, in a park laid out by Capability Brown). That is why the old parish church, All Saints, now stands on its own in the grounds, Grade I listed and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The village itself is small: Harrogate Road, Harewood Avenue, The Square, Church Lane and Bondgate hold most of the homes, with Harewood Villas and Spring Gardens close by.
The Harewood Arms stands opposite the entrance to the estate, and Harewood C of E Primary School, built by the estate in 1864, faces the grounds on the A61. There is also a medical centre, a village hall and a community cafe. Most people in the parish live at Wigton Moor, its most populous part, so check whether your address is in the village or out there before the day.
How the van gets to Harewood
From Bradford the van crosses north Leeds and takes the A61, Harrogate Road, which runs straight through the village. The A659, Harewood Avenue, joins it outside the main entrance to Harewood House, coming from Collingham, and the A61 then drops down the Wharfe valley to Harewood Bridge, built in 1729 and widened by John Carr in 1771.
