Moving in West Carlton: what to know first
West Carlton is a scatter of farms and a few houses, such as Bowood on Carlton Lane and the homes at Highfield Farm, rather than a street, so each move is planned around one property. Carlton Lane has no pavement and no street lights, and it crosses a bridge close to the hamlet. The side tracks are a mixed bag: Cross Lane is tarmac for part of its length and compacted stone further on, and Mall Lane is unsurfaced. Daylight hours suit a move here, and a dry day helps if the van has to use a yard.
West Carlton: the local picture
Only one of Carlton parish's three listed buildings stands at this end: Grange Farm Cottage, a late 17th-century sandstone farmhouse of two bays, with four-light mullioned windows under a continuous hood mould. The other named places are farms, Highfield Farm, Roebuck Farm and West Stone among them, with Calf Hole Wood and Calfhole Beck on the slope and Freya's Spinney, a Woodland Trust planting for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee.
The line of the Ribchester to Tadcaster Roman road crosses the fields near the hamlet, and Mall Lane leaves Carlton Lane as an unsurfaced track, which is no place for a loaded van. If your house is along a farm track, send a photo of the surface and the gateway so the parking spot can be agreed first.
How the van gets to West Carlton
Carlton Lane is the only road. It is unlit, carries the national 60 mph limit, and is marked as unsuitable for lorries and coaches, so it is narrow in places. From Bradford the van comes through Guiseley to Town Head and turns east on to the lane, roughly 20 to 35 minutes by the estimate; coming from the airport side, the other end of Carlton Lane is reached through East Carlton.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 20 to 35 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in West Carlton
Why is my address Guiseley LS20 when the parish is Carlton?
Postcodes follow the delivery office, and West Carlton's mail comes through the Guiseley district, so LS20 is right. The parish is still Carlton and the council is Leeds City Council; for the booking, the house name, Carlton Lane and the full postcode are what matter.
Can the van drive up Cross Lane or Mall Lane?
Cross Lane is surfaced for part of the way and compacted stone beyond, so it depends how far along you are; Mall Lane is an unsurfaced track. Send a photo of the track and the gateway, and we will say where the van can safely stop.
Is it quicker to reach West Carlton from Guiseley or from Yeadon?
From Bradford, Guiseley is the usual way, turning on to Carlton Lane at Town Head. If the van is coming from Yeadon or the airport side, it uses Cemetery Road and comes through East Carlton instead.
