Sicklinghall: what to know before moving day
Main Street runs through the village with ponds at either end, and The Crescent, Back Lane and Geecroft Lane lead off it. There are two churches, St Peter's and the Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, a pub called the Scott's Arms, a primary school, a village hall and a cricket ground at the top of the village. The Catholic church, with its presbytery and former monastery, was designed by Charles Francis Hansom and built in 1849-54.
Granges surround the village: Skerry Grange and Sicklinghall Grange to the east and Addlethorpe Grange to the west. The big house is Stockeld Park, a Grade I Palladian villa in a 2,000-acre estate, and Wood Hall, designed by John Carr around 1800, is now a hotel. Horses are a feature too, with a livery yard in the village centre and riding stables to the west.
How the van gets to Sicklinghall
From Wetherby, Sicklinghall Road heads west across the fields and becomes Wetherby Road as it reaches the village. Stockeld Lane runs north past Stockeld Park towards Spofforth, and at the west end Main Street turns into Kirkby Lane for Kearby and Kirkby Overblow.
