Spofforth: what to know before moving day
The A661 is the village's High Street, and there has long been talk of a bypass that was never built, so loading at a High Street house happens beside through traffic. Castle Street runs off it towards the castle, a 13th-century fortified house built against a rock outcrop and now a ruin. Several houses here have pantile roofs: 47 to 53 Castle Street is a listed late 17th-century gritstone terrace of four, and 26 and 28 High Street are an 18th-century pair.
The newer streets are off School Lane and Park Road, among them Castle Ings, Station Court, Manor Garth and Park Mount, and newer still John Metcalf Mews and Percy Road. Blind Jack Metcalf, the 18th-century road builder, is buried at All Saints' Church. The station closed in 1964, and its trackbed is now the Harland Way path towards Thorp Arch.
How the van gets to Spofforth
The A661, Wetherby Road, starts at the South Wetherby roundabout, where it meets the A58, and runs north-west through Spofforth on its way to Harrogate. The A58 goes all the way from Bradford through Leeds to Wetherby. In the village, Deighton Road heads east towards North Deighton, and Ribston Road north towards Little Ribston.

No. Spofforth station closed to passengers in 1964, and the nearest now are Harrogate and Knaresborough. Buses run to Harrogate, Wetherby and Leeds, but a household move is a road job along the A661.

South of the village towards Sicklinghall, in the same civil parish, Spofforth with Stockeld. The Grade I house was designed by James Paine and built in 1758-63.
