Kirkheaton: what to know before moving day
The name means a high settlement with a church, and the church is St John the Baptist's, where a stone church stood before the Norman Conquest; its medieval tower survived a fire, and the rest was rebuilt in 1887 to 1888. In the churchyard are a grave slab and an 1821 monument to the children who died in the Colne Bridge mill fire of 1818. Kirkheaton was an urban district from 1894 until 1938, when it was merged into Kirkburton, which is why it sits in Kirkburton parish today.
The village centre is around Town Road, Shop Lane, School Lane and New Road, where Kirkheaton Primary School is, with the post office, the community centre and library, the surgery and the Spangled Bull. An 18th-century circular stone pinfold survives, and a milestone dated 1738 stands where Hollin Hall Lane meets Highgate Lane. George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes, both born here, played for Kirkheaton Cricket Club, and Dalton Bank nature reserve is on the village's edge.
How the van gets to Kirkheaton
The B6118 is the village road. It leaves the A62 Leeds Road at Bradley as Colne Bridge Road, crosses the River Colne on the listed 18th-century Colne Bridge, and reaches Kirkheaton as Upper Heaton Lane and Moor Top Road before running on as Highgate Lane towards Lepton. Cockley Hill Lane leaves Highgate Lane for the Cockley Hill side of the village.
