Canal conversions, the bridge choke points and the ground-floor question
The town is pinched between the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation, so nearly every cross-town move funnels over a small handful of crossings at Ledgard Bridge, Newgate and the Battyeford canal bridges. A loaded van cannot route around them. Add the rail corridor and the level crossings around Northorpe and you get a town where the sensible order of loading and unloading is decided by geography before anyone picks up a box.
Flooding is a live consideration rather than history. The Calder reached 5.4 metres at Ledgard Bridge in Storm Ciara, above the Boxing Day 2015 level, and put Calder View, Back Station Road and Newgate under water. If you are moving into or out of a ground-floor flat down there, we check the forecast, agree a plan B date, and we would rather say that plainly at the booking stage than turn up to a road that is closed.
