Kirkburton: what to know before moving day
North Road and George Street, both part of the B6116, form the main road through the village and hold most of the shops, among them a Co-op, a newsagent and a butcher. Kirkburton Library, the health centre opened in 2005, a police station, the Liberal Club and All Hallows church are all close to that stretch, and Kirkburton First and Middle Schools are nearby. The largest housing areas are Riley, Low Town, Brickfields and Turnshaws, with Hallas Road, Riley Lane and Turnshaw Road the roads into them.
The branch line from Huddersfield ended here. It opened in 1867, carried passengers until 1930 and goods until 1965; the houses along North Wood Park follow the old track bed, and a retaining wall and arch still stand where North Wood Park meets North Road. The parish holds 165 listed buildings, many of them stone weavers' cottages with long rows of mullioned windows. In an older cottage, measure the doors and stairs against any large furniture before the day.
How the van gets to Kirkburton
The A629 leaves Huddersfield as Wakefield Road and continues as Penistone Road past Fenay Bridge; Kirkburton's North Road (B6116) turns off it into the village, and Shelley Lane carries the B6116 on south. The van comes to Huddersfield from Bradford along the M62 and follows the A629 round the ring road before heading out this way.
