Shepley Lane Head: what to know before moving day
Lane Head has been a turnpike junction since the 1820s. The Barnsley and Shepley Lane Head Turnpike was built in 1825 by Blind Jack of Knaresborough, a second turnpike came across from Saddleworth by way of Holmfirth, and Toll Bar Cottage still stands on the A629 as it climbs from Shepley. Tolls ended in 1875. The Sovereign Inn, where Seth Senior is said to have started his brewery in 1829, has a carved stone face on its east gable.
Quarrying is the other thread. Stone from Lane Head has gone into Buckingham Palace, and Appleton Quarry on Holmfirth Road and the quarry on Carr Lane are both now part of Marshalls. The hamlet also had a Quaker meeting house, built in 1696 and a private house since 1706, and Lane Head House of the early 18th century is Grade II listed. Homes today are along Cross Lane, Piper Wells Lane, Highfield Court and St Marks Court, with the Sovereign Business Park and a Co-op food store and filling station at the junction. If your door is on the A629 or the A635 itself, say so when you book, so where the van stops can be agreed first.
How the van gets to Shepley Lane Head
Two A roads meet here. The A629 comes south from Huddersfield through Shepley as Lane Head Road, and the A635 runs from Holmfirth as Holmfirth Road and on to Upper Cumberworth as Barnsley Road; for a short stretch the two share Penistone Road. From Bradford the van comes through Huddersfield and down the A629.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
