Birds Edge: what to know before moving day
The two spellings matter more than you might think. Kirklees Council writes Birds Edge, while residents and the old Post Office directory use Birdsedge, and road signs have carried both. Most of the village is 19th-century stone cottages built for workers at the mill, which still runs as part of the Z Hinchliffe business based in Denby Dale. Birds Edge Mill itself is Grade II listed, and its four-storey block stands close to the road.
Newer homes sit on Highfield Avenue and Springfield Drive, just off Birdsedge Lane, near the First School and the Wesleyan Reform church. The village hall occupies the building of the school the Quakers founded in the 1870s. Next door is High Flatts, the old Quaker hamlet with its Friends Meeting House. The River Dearne, still only a stream here, runs a couple of hundred yards from the centre. The annual folk festival falls on the first Saturday in July, so check that date against your move.
How the van gets to Birds Edge
The A629 Penistone Road is the main road here: it runs south from Huddersfield through Shepley and Lane Head and passes a short way from the village centre, where Birdsedge Lane turns off towards the school and the hall. Windmill Lane and Broadstone Road are the smaller lanes on the moor side.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Either is fine. Kirklees uses Birds Edge and most residents write Birdsedge, so the postcode (HD8 8 and the rest) and the street name matter more. Give both with the house name or number and the van will find the door.
How do Birds Edge and High Flatts fit together?
They are neighbours rather than one place. High Flatts is a separate hamlet next to the village, founded around its Quaker meeting, and both sit in Denby Dale parish. A move to either is planned the same way from the A629.
