Moving in High Flatts: what to know first
Quaker Bottom drops downhill from Penistone Road with no pavements and is for access only, so the van goes down to the house and comes back up the same way. Pump Row and Mill Bank are short paved lanes off the main road, and stone steps link parts of the hamlet. Tell us whether there is room to turn near your door and how many steps there are between the lane and the house.
Penistone Road, the A629, is the trunk road through the hamlet, 40 mph and lit, with a pavement on one side, so the van does not load on it. Green Lane is a single-track lane only about two and a half metres wide, partly unsurfaced, and Windmill Lane is unlit with no pavement. The Thai restaurant and spa have customer parking, which is theirs to give, so ask before using it. A photo of your lane helps us decide where to stop.
High Flatts: the local picture
High Flatts grew up around its Quaker meeting. The Friends' Meeting House on Quaker Bottom dates from 1864 but reuses older stonework, including a re-set dated lintel. The Forty Steps, a public footpath of 40 steps, climbs out of the hamlet, and Birds Edge is the next village along Penistone Road.
Several houses here are listed. Low House, from the mid to late 18th century, has its road-side entrance on the upper floor and a basement at the lower end, so a delivery may go in upstairs. Broomhill is an early 19th-century house with a fluted Doric doorway and a tall round-arched stair window, Low House Farmhouse carries a dated panel of 1717, and Green Hollows is two cottages made into one.
How the van gets to High Flatts
The A629 Penistone Road runs past the hamlet at 40 mph, two lanes and about ten metres wide, with Windmill Lane, an unlit lane with no pavement, leaving it nearby. The suggested route from Bradford takes the M62 to the A644 and A62, crosses to the A642 and follows the A629 south by Lane Head to Quaker Bottom, roughly 40 to 55 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in High Flatts
Can the van park on Penistone Road outside High Flatts?
It is better not to. The A629 is a lit trunk road with a 40 mph limit here, so the van turns into Quaker Bottom or Windmill Lane and stops as near the door as the lane allows. Tell us which of the short lanes your house is on.
Can the van get down Quaker Bottom in High Flatts?
Yes, for a house on it. Quaker Bottom is for access only and runs downhill with no pavements, so the van goes down slowly, loads at the house and comes back up the same way. Tell us if there is a place to turn at your end.
Is Green Lane at High Flatts wide enough for a long van?
Only just. It is a single-track lane about two and a half metres wide with no pavement, and part of it is unsurfaced. Send a photo of the lane at your gate; if it is too tight, the van stops at the end and the furniture is carried from there.
