Denby Dale: what to know before moving day
The village grew at a crossroads, where the road from Barnsley to Shepley Lane Head met the road from Wakefield, and within 25 years of the Industrial Revolution it had mills, a railway station and far more people. Springfield Mill, where silk for the Queen Mother's wedding dress was woven, sits by the river near the centre and was damaged twice when the Dearne burst its banks in 2007. The works of Z Hinchliffe and Sons and the Hartcliffe Mills site stand further along the valley.
Around the centre, the White Hart, the community library, the post office and the Methodist church are all close to Wakefield Road. The church began as a Wesleyan chapel in 1799 to 1801 and is Grade II listed. Streets of houses climb away from the valley floor, among them Miller Hill, Cumberworth Lane, Wesley Terrace, Leak Hall Road and Norman Road, with newer closes such as The Meadows and Riverside Court. The Pie Hall, paid for by the 1964 pie, is the village's community building.
The stone viaduct, built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1877 to 1880 and more than 100 feet high, carries the Penistone Line over the valley and is Grade II listed. A cast-iron milepost, also listed, stands beside Barnsley Road at the foot of the arches.
How the van gets to Denby Dale
Two main roads meet here. The A636 Wakefield Road is the main street, and the A635 Barnsley Road crosses the valley near the viaduct, running west to Shepley Lane Head and the A629 and east towards Barnsley. From Bradford the van goes by way of Huddersfield and the A629, then along the A635. Cumberworth Lane is the lane up to Lower Cumberworth.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Yes. Denby Dale station is on the Penistone Line, with hourly trains to Huddersfield and to Sheffield by way of Barnsley. It is a boundary station, so West and South Yorkshire travel tickets are both valid there. The platform has no step-free access.
