Moving in Linfit: what to know first
Linfit Lane is a long, steady climb along its whole length, which is slow going with a full load and worth thinking about before a winter date. The homes are a few dozen houses, with stables and outbuildings among them, and there are no car parks, so the van works from the lane outside your house. Say if your drive has room for it to pull in.
Thorncliffe Lane and Burton Royd Lane run off towards Thorncliff, the second a minor lane that turns into a bridleway, and Thorncliff Lane is a service lane, so for a farm or stable along them say where the tarmac ends and whether a long van can turn.
Linfit: the local picture
Linfit had a steam-powered mill by about 1800, and together with the older mill at Dogley it grew into a substantial business under the Kenyon and Hey families. Manor Mill at Linfit, a corn mill from about 1832, had one of the largest water wheels in the country, 50 feet across, until it was taken for scrap in the Second World War. Manor Mill Cottage is now a bed and breakfast.
Linfit Lane is the tertiary road through, and Linfit Fold, a residential lane off it, is recorded as unpaved, so plan a short carry if your house is at the far end. Tithe Wood and Beldon Brook are within about 400 metres, and Burton Royd is the next named spot along. The nearest postcode is about 170 metres from Linfit Lane, so send a pin or the house name with the booking.
