Highburton: what to know before moving day
Two steep roads, Far Dene and Slant Gate, lead up to the village. The historic part is around the Highburton Cross, where Far Dene meets Town Gate and Hall Lane; the cross marks a medieval market, and its stepped base probably dates from the 14th century. Burton Village Hall, once Highburton School, is the base of Kirkburton Parish Council. The Smiths Arms and Highburton CofE First Academy are both close to the centre.
Highburton was a hamlet until the middle of the 20th century, when housing estates were built over fields and allotments, mostly on the streets off Moor Lane and Burton Acres Lane. Burton Acres Drive, Burton Acres Way, Highfield Road, Birkhead Close, Mead Way and Grenoside View are typical of that housing. The former St Helen's Colliery was on Moor Lane.
How the van gets to Highburton
From Kirkburton, North Road (B6116) meets the foot of Slant Gate, and Far Dene is the other way up; either brings the van to Town Gate. For the estates on the east side, Moor Lane is the better road. The A629 Penistone Road passes about 400 metres from the Burton Acres streets, and links it with Huddersfield and the M62.

Highburton grew up on the hill above Kirkburton, but both are part of the historic Kirkburton township and today's civil parish. Kirkburton is the shopping end; Highburton is mainly housing. They share the HD8 postcode, so the street name matters when you book.
Which way up is easier for a long van, Slant Gate or Far Dene?
