Kirk Hammerton: what to know before moving day
The church explains the name: kirk is the Old Norse word for church. St John the Baptist's keeps its original Anglo-Saxon church as the Lady Chapel of a building enlarged in 1892. Around it are Church Street, Old Church Green and Stanyforth Crescent, with St Johns Grove and Rathmall Lane to the north-west and Chapel Street and Parkway to the south-west. The village also has a primary school, a cricket club and a village hall.
Hammerton station, which the village shares with Green Hammerton, is on the north-east side, off Station Road. Its level crossing gates are worked by hand from the old station building, and the car park at the back takes five cars, so a van loading nearby should keep clear of the crossing. Station Close and Kirk Hammerton Business Park are on that side too. The parish also takes in the hamlet of Wilstrop.
How the van gets to Kirk Hammerton
The A59 York Road is the main road: from Wetherby, take the A168 north beside the A1(M) to junction 47 and turn east on the A59, which passes the north-east side of the village. Station Road and Crooked Lane are the streets on that side, and Gilsthwaite Lane and Kirk Hammerton Lane are the lanes to the west.
