Fence: what to know before moving day
The older houses are mostly small stone cottages, with housing developments added from the 1960s onwards; closes such as Pendle Fields, Deer Chace, Forester Drive, Greystones Drive and Hoarstones Avenue are all 20 mph roads. The village stops to the west just past St Anne's Church, where the bypass cuts across the line of the old road.
The name comes from the medieval enclosure where the King's deer were kept in the Forest of Pendle, recorded in 1402 as Fens in Penhill. Cuckstool Lane, running south from the war memorial, is named after the village ducking stool. Hoarstones, now a listed 18th-century stone house, was the starting point of the 1633 witchcraft trials. Fence Gate Inn is a listed early 19th-century house turned pub, and the Bay Horse was once a row of six cottages. The higher ground north-east of the village is inside the Forest of Bowland AONB.
How the van gets to Fence
Two roads matter: the A6068 Barrowford Road, the bypass, and the B6248 Cuckstool Lane, which drops south to Clitheroe Road and junction 12 of the M65 at Brierfield. From Bradford the van reaches the end of the M65 at Colne by the A6068 through Keighley, then comes west to Brierfield and up the B6248.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 60 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
