Emley: what to know before moving day
The village is made up of distinct parts: Emley Woodhouse to the east, Warburton, Tyburn Hill to the south and Hag Hill to the south-east, Emley Moor, Upper Crawshaw and Stringer House Lane to the west, and Thorncliffe and the Grange Drive estate to the north. At the centre, by the stump of the medieval market cross, are the post office and shop, and St Michael's Church, largely late medieval with a 15th-century tower, is Grade I listed.
Several old chapels are now homes, which matters if your address is a house name: Wesley House at Warburton was the Wesley Chapel of 1826, Bethel House on Upper Lane stands on the site of Bethel Chapel, and Chapel Royd is housing on a former chapel on Church Street. Emley Moor Colliery closed in 1985 and its site is now a business park. The Emley Show is held at Factory Farm on Emley Moor on the first Saturday of August, so pick another day for a move if you can.
How the van gets to Emley
Emley is reached by lanes rather than main roads. From Huddersfield the A642 runs to Grange Moor, where the A637 heads east through Flockton; from Flockton, Clough Road runs south and enters the village by Rectory Lane. From the Emley Moor side, Westfield Lane and Chapel Lane come in from the crossroads near the mast.
