Cross Roads (Emley Moor): what to know before moving day
At the crossroads is Emley Moor WMC, the working men's club at 2 Common Lane, and to the south, on Jagger Lane, is the concrete tower of the Emley Moor transmitting station, usually called Emley Moor Mast. The tower was built in 1969 to 1971, is Grade II listed and is the tallest freestanding structure in the UK. It replaced a mast that collapsed on 19 March 1969, when parts of it and its guy wires came through the roof of a nearby Methodist chapel; that chapel was later converted into two homes.
Around the lanes are farms such as Moor Head, where the farmhouse dates from 1769 and the barn has a timber-framed core of the 17th century or earlier, both listed. Thorncliffe Farm Shop is a short way off, and the Emley Show is held at Factory Farm on Emley Moor on the first Saturday of August.
