Burton Leonard: what to know before moving day
Many of the older buildings are magnesian limestone, the rock under the village. South of it, the Burton Leonard Lime Quarries, now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, supplied lime and building stone until 1941. The Old Hall has a timber-framed core cased in limestone, and St Leonard's Church of 1878 has a cast-iron drinking fountain against its churchyard wall.
The Royal Oak is the one pub since the Hare and Hounds closed in 2017 and was demolished for new housing. The village store and post office is on Copgrove Road, the school is on Front Street, and the Methodist church and St Leonard's are on Back Lane. Newer closes include Hymas Court, Wigby Close and The Orchard.
How the van gets to Burton Leonard
The A61 passes to the north of the village and the A1(M) is to the east at Boroughbridge. Inside the village the roads are Station Lane, Copgrove Road, Mill Lane and Scarah Lane, with 30 mph limits. Buses run from the green to Knaresborough and to Ripon, the two towns the village looks to.
