Moving in Walshford: what to know first
Walshford is where the A168 crosses the Nidd on Walshford Bridge, a 60 mph road with a separate footway. That is not a road to stop a van on, so loading is from a drive, the inn's grounds with permission, or Moor Lane, the side road with a pavement along one side. The Avenue is a private drive.
The houses are few and varied. Fair View Cottage and Rose Cottage are an early 19th-century brown brick pair with a continuous outshut at the back, Huggins House is a rendered mid-19th-century house two rooms deep, and the 18th-century pinfold, a small walled pound about 5 metres long, still stands. With a cottage like that, check whether the back door is the easier way in for the bigger pieces.
Walshford: the local picture
The name means the ford of the Welshmen and was first written as Walleford in 1214; the ford is long gone, but there has been a bridge here since the 13th century. The A168 was the original A1, the Great North Road, until the motorway bypassed the hamlet, and The Bridge Inn, a converted Georgian farmhouse and former coaching inn, is Grade II listed. Its Byron Room holds woodcarving and plaster brought from Halnaby Hall, where Byron spent his honeymoon.
There are only a few houses, and several are listed: Huggins House, rendered and mid-19th century, and Fair View Cottage and Rose Cottage, an early 19th-century brick pair with pantile roofs. An 18th-century pinfold survives, and Walshford Lodge, Grade II*, guards the drive to Ribston Hall with gate piers topped by sphinxes and lions.
How the van gets to Walshford
The A168 runs through Walshford as a 60 mph road, partly one-way, and crosses the Nidd on Walshford Bridge. From Bradford the van takes the M62 and M1 to the A1(M) near Wetherby, then follows the A168 north; count on roughly 45 to 60 minutes from Bradford, an estimate. Moor Lane is the other road close by.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 45 to 60 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
