Moving in Thistle Hill: what to know first
Thistle Hill is the B6163 itself, and the speed limit steps down as it comes towards town: 60 mph at the A658 end, 40 mph past the Knaresborough Celtic ground, and 30 mph from around Chadwick Park. A house fronting the main road is best loaded from its drive. Chadwick Park, Stephenson Close and Coronation Terrace are the residential streets off it, and any of them makes an easier stop than the B6163.
Behind the main road, Aspin Lane leads to the Aspin estate, where Aspin Oval, Aspin Way and Aspin Park Lane are ordinary residential streets and the van can stop outside. Cass Lane is a service lane with no pavement, and Forest Moor Road drops from 40 to 30 mph as it nears town.
Thistle Hill: the local picture
The road itself is called Thistle Hill, a 30 mph secondary road, and the homes off it include Chadwick Park, at the heart of the place, and Coronation Terrace a little further along. Forest Moor Road, also 30 mph, is the other through road close by, and the Aspin estate, with a row of shops on Aspin Lane, is within about 700 metres.
A lot of the open ground here is given over to sport. Calcutt Oval is the ground of Knaresborough Forest Cricket Club, Knaresborough Cricket Club has a ground of its own nearby, and Knaresborough Celtic FC has a pitch and clubhouse too. Birkham Wood, a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, is marked about 700 metres away. If a move falls on a weekend afternoon in the season, allow for extra cars near the grounds.
How the van gets to Thistle Hill
From Bradford the van comes through Pool-in-Wharfedale on the A658 Harrogate Road, stays on the A658 past Harrogate and then turns north onto the B6163, which is Thistle Hill from the start. The same road carries on through Calcutt towards Low Bridge and the town centre. The run is estimated at roughly 40 to 55 minutes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Thistle Hill
Who collects the bins on Thistle Hill?
North Yorkshire Council. Thistle Hill sits inside Knaresborough parish and the Knaresborough West ward, and postcodes such as HG5 8QD come under the North Yorkshire district, so that is the council for bins, council tax and any parking questions on moving day.
Is Thistle Hill a road or a place?
Both. The B6163 between the A658 and Calcutt is named Thistle Hill, and so is the high point beside it. If your address is a side street such as Chadwick Park or Stephenson Close, give that name rather than Thistle Hill, so the van turns off the main road at the right place.
How far is Thistle Hill from Knaresborough Market Place?
A little over a mile by road. The B6163 runs down through Calcutt, crosses the Nidd at Low Bridge and climbs Briggate and Gracious Street to the High Street, so a move between Thistle Hill and the old town is a short run on one road.
