Ripley: what to know before moving day
In the 19th century William Amcotts-Ingilby pulled down the old village, keeping only the castle and All Saints' Church, and rebuilt it on the model of a village in Alsace, with a Town Hall of 1854 styled like a French hotel de ville. The parish has 55 Grade II listed buildings and two at Grade I. The rows at 1-5 and 6-10 Main Street, the Estate Cottages and South View are gritstone houses with deep eaves and hipped slate roofs.
Market Place has the stocks, the market cross, the war memorial and a drinking fountain, and the Boar's Head, first the Star Inn, stands on a corner there. The village school dates from 1830. Chantry Court and Orchard Lane are small residential closes. In a listed cottage, measure the doorway and staircase before booking anything bulky.
How the van gets to Ripley
The A61 Ripon Road passes the village on the east side, and Main Street leaves it for the centre. The B6165, which runs between Knaresborough and Pateley Bridge, passes through Ripley too. From Bradford the van reaches Harrogate on the A658 and follows the A61 north through Killinghall; bus route 36 runs the same A61 line.
