The name has nothing to do with the old London asylum. It most likely comes from the Old English for 'at the buildings'. Rose Cottage, from the mid to late 17th century, has a timber frame inside its stone walls and is listed. Scarah Bank Farmhouse, a house and barn later joined, and Whipley Hall, mid 18th-century gritstone, are listed farms close by.
On the map the B6165 through Bedlam is Whipley Bank. Just east of the hamlet, Scarah Bridge, a late 18th-century stone bridge of three arches, carries the B6165 over Thornton Beck. Law Lane, Whipley Lane and Kettle Spring Lane lead off to farms and to Shaw Mills; ask before booking whether a long van can turn at the property.
