Moving in Kearby: what to know first
Kearby is very thinly built: fewer than ten buildings around Clap Gate and Kearby Town End, most of them at Cherry Tree Farm and Rookfields Farm. Kirkby Lane and Clap Gate are the through road, and Mill Lane and Gill Lane are unlit country lanes off them. North Lane is a bridleway, not a road, so a house reached only that way means a carry from the lane.
The hamlet sits on the high ground above the Wharfe, with a viewpoint at Cliff Top, and Kearby Cliff runs down from it to Netherby and the river. For a farmhouse, say whether there is a yard the van can turn in, and whether any of the furniture is coming out of a barn or outbuilding rather than the house.
Kearby: the local picture
The name is old. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Kearby as Cherebi, a name probably taken from Kærer, an Old Danish personal name, and Barrowby, in the same parish, as Berghebi, the farmstead on the hill. Around 1162 William de Percy II confirmed land at Barrowby to the Cistercian monks of Sawley Abbey, who ran a grange there.
On the ground Kearby is farms and a few houses. Cherry Tree Farm and Rookfields Farm are close to Clap Gate, Kearby Methodist Church stands about 600 metres west, and Anaker Beck passes under Anaker Bridge. Cliff Top has a viewpoint over mid-Wharfedale.
