Moving in Houses Hill: what to know first
Houses Hill is a scatter of cottages, farmhouses and newer houses along three lanes rather than a village street, and many homes go by a name as well as a number. Long Tongue Scrog Lane has the most addresses, but west of the houses it turns into an unsurfaced public bridleway that motor vehicles may not use. The van comes in from the Healey Green Lane end and stops where the made road runs out, so if your door is along the bridleway stretch, say how far it is from the tarmac.
Healey Green Lane is a country lane that climbs from the hamlet up to Liley Lane, the B6118, and that is the way the van arrives. The short Sands Lane here links Healey Green Lane with Addle Croft Lane, the way out towards Huddersfield, and is not the Sands Lane by the railway in Mirfield. Whitley Willows is a private road with one-way sections, so for an address there tell us which entrance to use.
Houses Hill: the local picture
Long Tongue Scrog Lane has the most homes, then Healey Green Lane, with one on Sands Lane, and many houses carry names such as High Cross, Shrog Bottom, Field Cottage, Lodge Cottage and Royd Farm. Royd Farmhouse, about 200 metres west, is a late medieval timber-framed house cased in stone in the 17th century, with a massive lintel over the door and a listed barn alongside.
Hall Wood and Rods Beck lie just to the south and Hutchin Wood a little to the north, and Gregory Farmhouse, a late 18th-century farmhouse with external steps up one gable, is listed about half a kilometre east. For a named house, put the name on the booking as well as the postcode.
How the van gets to Houses Hill
Healey Green Lane is the usual way in: it leaves Liley Lane, the B6118 between Upper Hopton and Grange Moor, and drops to the houses after about 800 metres. From Bradford the van takes the M606 and M62, the A644 through Mirfield and Hopton Lane up to Liley Lane, roughly 25 to 40 minutes in all as an estimate. A short Sands Lane joins Healey Green Lane to Addle Croft Lane on the Huddersfield side.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Houses Hill
Is the Sands Lane at Houses Hill the one that leads to Mirfield?
No. The Sands Lane here is a short link between Healey Green Lane and Addle Croft Lane. The Sands Lane in Mirfield is a different road by the railway, off Steanard Lane, so from Mirfield the van comes up by Hopton and Liley Lane to Healey Green Lane.
Can the van get to the far end of Long Tongue Scrog Lane?
Not all the way. West of the houses the lane becomes a public bridleway closed to motor vehicles, so the van stops where the surfaced lane ends. Tell us which house you are in, and if the furniture has to be carried along the track, how far that is.
Is Houses Hill counted as Mirfield or Kirkburton?
Kirkburton. The hamlet is in Kirkburton civil parish and ward, with HD5 postcodes, although the van usually comes in from the Mirfield side. HD8 postcodes start just to the south, so give the full postcode when you book.
