Hallfield: what to know before moving day
The estate went up in stages. The first part, from the 1950s, is built round First, Second, Third and Fourth Avenue. In the 1960s more council housing followed around Ceres Road, which a cemetery separates from the earlier streets, and the Home Office built houses to the north for staff at the young offenders institution. Burrel Close, The Chase and Freemans Way are 1970s, and a few houses on Hallfield Lane date from the 2010s.
Most homes are low-rise semis and terraces with two or three bedrooms, and the estate has a number of unusual chalet-style terraces. On one of those, check the stair and the upstairs ceiling height before a wardrobe or bed frame goes up. Hallfield Lane carries the high school, the health centre on the site of the old Hallfield mansion and, further along, the Church on the Corner in the old cemetery chapel.
How the van gets to Hallfield
Hallfield Lane is the spine of the estate, running east from the town centre past the high school, and Walton Road and York Road lead away to the east. From Bradford, the van reaches Wetherby on the A58 through Collingham, roughly 40 to 55 minutes, then crosses the centre to Hallfield Lane. Freemans Way has an underpass for people on foot, not for vehicles.

What was HMS Ceres doing in Wetherby?
It was a naval shore base, a stone frigate or landship, built on Hallfield Lane in 1942 and named in turn Cabot, Demetrius, Rodney and Ceres before it closed in 1958. Wetherby High School took over the site, and Ceres Road and Ceres Court on the estate carry the name.
