Micklethwaite: what to know before moving day
The name is Old Norse for a great clearing, and the village grew as an agricultural hamlet until worsted mills opened on its south side by the canal in the 19th century. The old core is listed stone. The Manor House at 8 and 10 Victoria Street dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and was later divided, 12 to 20 Victoria Street is a terrace of cottages, and Micklethwaite Grange is dated 1695. A K6 telephone kiosk from 1935 stands in front of 8 High Fold. Part of the village became a conservation area in 2005.
Victoria Street, New Street, Union Street and The Green all branch off Micklethwaite Lane, and Beck Road and Carr Lane leave it further along. The Methodist chapel of 1875 is still there and makes a useful landmark for directions. Further up, Hill Top Farmhouse and its archway date from the mid 17th century, and Peas Acre and Bank End are named spots on the map.
How the van gets to Micklethwaite
Micklethwaite Lane leaves Keighley Road at Crossflatts and crosses the canal on a single-lane steel swing bridge, installed in 1985 and known to the canal as bridge 199; it sits on the line of the old road from Bingley over Hawksworth Moor to Ilkley. North of the bridge the lane runs into the village, mostly without a pavement. The bridge swings for boats and takes one direction at a time, so allow a few spare minutes.

The north side. The canal separates the village from the Bingley end of Crossflatts, and Micklethwaite Lane crosses it on the swing bridge. It is in Bingley parish and the Bingley East ward, and has been under Bingley Town Council since it was created in April 2016.
Can a long van get over the Micklethwaite swing bridge?
