Eldwick: what to know before moving day
Otley Road is the main street, a lit 30 mph road with pavements on both sides, lined by residential roads such as Moorcroft, Landsmoor Grove, Glen View Road, Lyndale Road and Sheriff Lane. The post office and Eldwick Memorial Hall, built with stone from the old textile mill, are close to Otley Road, and the 1922 war memorial, a stone cenotaph, stands at a road junction. Eldwick Beck, the stream through the village, also names the stretch just before High Eldwick near the Methodist church and The Acorn pub, where 1 to 5 Eldwick Beck is a listed row of about 1650.
High Eldwick is thinly populated moor-edge country; Harvey Smith's show-jumping stables and the Dick Hudson's pub are both up there. Among the village's listed houses are Eldwick Hall of 1696 and Spring Farmhouse of 1773. On the slope down to Bingley, Prince of Wales Park, opened in 1865 and Grade II listed since 2001, forms the dividing line between the village and the town. For a farmhouse on the moor edge, mention any unmade track to the door.
How the van gets to Eldwick
From Bingley the way up is through Gilstead: Warren Lane runs north from the top of Gilstead Lane into Eldwick and meets Otley Road. Heights Lane, a long tertiary lane, runs north from Otley Road to Walsh Lane. The 615, 616 and 619 buses finish at a turning point in High Eldwick.
