Gilstead: what to know before moving day
Gilstead Lane is the main street, a marked two-lane road where Ferncliffe Road, Primrose Lane and Warren Lane all meet. At 53 and 55 Gilstead Lane is a listed 17th-century stone house, later split into two. Most of the housing around is newer, on roads such as Rylands Avenue, Royd Avenue, Pendle Road, South Hill Drive and Rombalds Drive, with the recreation ground, a playground and allotments in the village. St Wilfrid's Church and its hall are close to Gilstead Lane.
At the edge of the village are the remains of Milner Field, the mansion Titus Salt Jr, son of Sir Titus Salt of Saltaire, completed in 1872. It overlooked the Aire Valley towards Salts Mill and was demolished in the 1950s; its listed North Lodge of 1871 to 1873, with a broached turret, is lived in again, and Milner Fields Gardens, an 18th-century stone house nearby, is also listed. Eldwick Primary School, confusingly, is on Warren Lane in Gilstead.
How the van gets to Gilstead
From Bingley town centre, Ferncliffe Road and Primrose Lane both lead up to Gilstead Lane. Warren Lane carries on north from the top of Gilstead Lane towards Eldwick, and it is also the road for Eldwick Primary School. On the valley floor, the A650 Sir Fred Hoyle Way is the fast road between Crossflatts and Cottingley.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 15 to 30 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
