Clifford: what to know before moving day
In 1831 the corn mills on Bramham Beck, on Old Mill Lane, were turned into flax mills by the Grimston brothers, making yarn and shoe thread, and at their height they employed about 300 people, many living in the stone terraced cottages in the village. Those cottages, like many of Clifford's older buildings, are magnesian limestone. The centre is a conservation area where new building must use local limestone, and green belt separates Clifford from Bramham and Boston Spa.
The village has three churches: St Luke's, on high ground at the western end and consecrated in 1842, a Methodist chapel, and the Catholic church of St Edward King and Confessor, built for the Irish mill workers. High Street, Chapel Lane and Albion Street hold much of the older stone, with newer family housing on streets such as Willow Crescent, Bellwood Avenue and Nunnery Way. The Albion and the Old Star pubs and the village hall are easy landmarks. For a cottage, measure the front door and stairs first.
How the van gets to Clifford
The A1(M) is just over a mile west of the village. From Bradford the van crosses Leeds towards Wetherby and the A1(M), then takes the local roads in: Bramham Road from Bramham, Boston Road from Boston Spa, and Clifford Moor Road.
