Burnley Wood: what to know before moving day
By the 1880s Burnley Wood and neighbouring Fulledge were a dense grid of mainly two-bedroom terraced houses. Most were given rear yards opening onto back streets wide enough for carts, which today still take bin lorries, so loading from the back may be possible: tell the driver if your yard gate is wide enough for furniture. On Hollingreave Road, Glebe Street, Dall Street, Sussex Street and Hufling Lane, some houses have a small front garden, and a few have bay windows and cellars.
Much of the area has been rebuilt. Streets around Waterloo Road were cleared in the 1970s, more came down later around May Street and Duke Street, and newer family houses now stand west of St Stephen's Church on Oxford Road, which is listed. Burnley Wood Park was laid out in the cleared ground around Morley Street. Hufling Hall, a Grade II listed late 17th-century farmhouse, survives between Victorian houses, and the Royal Butterfly pub is on the corner of Hollingreave Road and Hufling Lane.
How the van gets to Burnley Wood
Todmorden Road, the A671, is the main road along the east side, and Hufling Lane runs off it into the district, meeting Branch Road, Brooklands Road, Hollingreave Road and Waterloo Road. Coming from Bradford the van reaches Burnley on the M65 from Colne. Near Hufling Lane, the railway crosses the road at the busy level crossing by the former Towneley station.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 55 to 65 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
