The name is Old English for the settlement of the bee-keepers, and the Domesday Book records four villagers here under Gospatric.
The road south of the village was part of the Bickerton and Rufforth turnpike, and in the 1820s Bickerton was a stop for coaches between Leeds and York; a lane called Turnpike Lane is still on the map. A listed cast iron milepost stands on the south side of York Road east of the turning to Bickerton. The village was its own parish from 1866 until it merged with Bilton in 1937.
How the van gets to Bickerton
The B1224, York Road, is the way in from Wetherby: it runs from the A1(M) at junction 46 past Ingmanthorpe and on east to the Bickerton turn, then continues to Bilton and Long Marston. Rudgate leaves the village north to Tockwith, and Tom Cat Lane and South Field Lane are the smaller roads.
