Wighill: what to know before moving day
The village is compact: Main Street, Church Lane and York Road, with the White Swan Inn, which reopened in 2009 after two years closed and doubles as the polling station. All six listed buildings in the parish are in the village. All Saints' Church, Grade I, has 12th and 15th-century origins and is built of limestone; Wighill Manor Farmhouse, of about 1791, has a 16th-century doorway surround with fluted columns, while the School House and Brook Hall are brick.
Wighill Park, north-west of the village, was the seat of the Stapleton family and later the family home of Lord Hawke, the England cricketer. The south end of the parish runs down to a bend in the Wharfe. Some historians think Wicheal, where Uhtred the Bold was killed in 1016, was Wighill.
How the van gets to Wighill
Wighill Lane is the road from the west: it runs from Walton to the village at the national speed limit most of the way. York Road leaves the other end of the village for Healaugh. From Wetherby, the van goes out through Walton and along Wighill Lane.
