Stanbury: what to know before moving day
Most of the listed houses are on Main Street. Numbers 72 and 74 are a listed pair of millstone grit houses flanked by barns, the older one dated 1727; the Manor House dates from 1753, and 20 to 24 and 64 to 70 Main Street are listed 18th and early 19th-century houses. The small church, built in 1848, went without a name for 150 years until it became St Gabriel's in 1998. There is a village school, and two pubs, The Friendly and the Wuthering Heights, which dates from 1763 and was known locally as The Cross.
Two reservoirs are close by. Lower Laithe Reservoir, opened in 1925 on Sladen Beck, sits just to the south, and Ponden Reservoir, finished in 1876, is also close by, as is Ponden Hall, a Grade II* farmhouse of 1634 that became a bed and breakfast in 2014. The Old Silent Inn, over 400 years old, stands close to the village. For a house with a barn attached or a door set into a thick old wall, a photo and a tape-measure reading save guesswork.
How the van gets to Stanbury
The way in from Bradford is the B6144 to Haworth, then the B6142 through the village to West Lane, Sun Lane and on to Main Street, Stanbury. There is a second way from Oxenhope: the embankment of Lower Laithe Reservoir carries the road between Oxenhope and Stanbury, known as Waterhead Lane, so a move from the Oxenhope side need not go through Haworth at all.

Which parish is Stanbury in now?
Haworth and Stanbury. The old combined parish of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury was split in April 2023, when Cross Roads became a parish of its own. Stanbury was briefly a parish itself, from 1894 until 1938.
What was flooded when Lower Laithe Reservoir was built?
The hamlet of Smith Bank and its mill, on the old road across the Sladen valley. The reservoir dam now carries that road instead, which is why the embankment is a working route for traffic between Stanbury and Oxenhope.
