Moving in Scar Top: what to know first
Scar Top is a meeting of three lanes above Ponden Reservoir: Scar Top Road, Colne Road and Oldfield Lane. Scar Top Road and Colne Road carry the national speed limit and none of the three has a footway, so a long van should not stand in the road to load. If your house has a yard, a gateway or a bit of hardstanding, tell us where it is so the van can pull fully off the lane.
The old houses are stone with stone slate roofs. Scar Top Farm is a 17th-century range of farmhouse, farm buildings and cottages, painted and joined together, that now makes four homes, so a yard or entrance may be shared with neighbours; let them know the day and the time. Down the hill, Ponden Lane is a narrow tarmac lane with no markings before it turns into a private gravel and concrete track that walkers also use, so for a house down there say how far the van can go and where it can turn.
Scar Top: the local picture
Scar Top Chapel and Sunday School was built in 1869 to replace a chapel of 1818; it belonged to the Methodists until the 1970s and has been independent since. Scar Top Farm, a 17th-century farmhouse joined to its farm buildings and cottages, is listed and now makes four homes. Ponden Hall, Ponden Mill and the guest house on Ponden Lane are all within half a kilometre.
Moor Lodge, north-west of the hamlet, was a shooting lodge built by Amos Nelson and later turned into a furniture and gift shop with tearooms; it is thought to have inspired Ferndean Manor in Jane Eyre. If your home is one of the four in the old farm range and the yard is shared, say where the van can stand.
How the van gets to Scar Top
From Bradford the van comes through Haworth to West Lane and Sun Lane, along Main Street in Stanbury, then up Hob Lane to Colne Road and on to Scar Top Road. That road is a 60 mph lane heading for the Lancashire border, and the K14 bus to Keighley uses it, though not often.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Scar Top
Why is Scar Top in Keighley parish when Stanbury is next door?
Parish lines follow old boundaries, not the nearest village. ONS postcode data puts BD22 0JR, at Scar Top, in Keighley civil parish, while postcodes such as BD22 0HP, a few hundred metres away, are in Haworth and Stanbury. Both are in the Worth Valley ward, and Bradford Council runs bins and council tax for each.
Can a long van get down Ponden Lane from Scar Top?
Partly, and it depends on the house. The first stretch is a narrow tarmac lane with no lane markings; beyond it the lane is a private gravel and concrete track and a public footpath, leading on to Ponden Hall and Ponden House. Tell us the property and whether there is room to turn.
Is Scar Top Farm one house or several?
Several. The listed range of 17th-century farmhouse, farm buildings and cottages is divided into four homes. Thick stone walls and mullioned windows mean doorways set the limit on furniture, so measure them and send the sizes of anything big.
