Moving in Lumb Foot: what to know first

Getting the van down is the main question. Lumbfoot Road leaves Sun Lane beside the Lumbfoot Lane bus stops and drops into the valley; it is a private road and a public footpath at the same time, so walkers share it, and lower down it narrows to a service road with a small bridge. Tell us whether your house is above or below that bridge and where a long van can turn, or send a photo, so the driver knows whether to drive down or carry the last stretch.

Homes here are few and mostly old: the row of mill workers' cottages from the 1840s, since modernised, a farm, and a handful of other houses such as Dale Foot and Dale Moor. In cottages of that age the stairs can be steep and tight, so measure them before booking a big wardrobe. Sun Lane above is a 40 mph road with bus stops at the turning, so the van does not wait there while loading.

Lumb Foot: the local picture

Vehicles get in by Lumbfoot Road, a private road that leaves Sun Lane by the Sun Lane Lumbfoot Lane bus stop and doubles as a public footpath. That approach is the thing to plan: walkers use it, and turning room at the bottom is worth checking before booking. Stanbury Cemetery is beside the turning, and Milking Hill Farm is the nearest farm.

The hamlet grew around Lumbfoot Mill on the valley floor, water-powered at first and on steam from about 1900. Most of it has been pulled down, but a stump of the chimney and the engine house still stand. The row of cottages put up between 1840 and 1852 for the mill workers is lived in and modernised, and an old packhorse bridge nearby, listed, carries a footpath over the River Worth.

How the van gets to Lumb Foot

The van comes from Bradford on the B6144 to Haworth, then the B6142 through the village to West Lane, and on along Sun Lane, a 40 mph road, for just under a kilometre to the Lumbfoot Lane stop, where the private road goes down into the hamlet. Lower Laithe Reservoir and the water treatment works are a short way off.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
