The cottages on and around Main Street and Changegate are 18th and 19th century millstone grit, often three storeys, with the door opening straight onto the setts and no rear access whatsoever. Everything in a top-floor bedroom comes down two flights of a staircase built for people carrying a candle, then out onto a cobbled slope.
